Last CSA Day for the Summer (More to Come in Fall!) and Special Friday Breakfast
Even though my summer internship with Morven is coming to an end, our garden is anything but winding down for the season. We had yet another big CSA Day yesterday! As our garden continues to grow and thrive, we are able to offer more and more vegetables each week. When some plants are dying out, we have others that are on the rise. For example, this week our squash and zucchinis did not produce as much fruit, but our cucumbers went to town! Yesterday we counted 46 cucumbers we had harvested throughout the week! See the picture for proof! We gave each of our CSA-ers 3 cucumbers. They also got more squash and zucchini, jalapeno peppers, okra, carrots, beets, tomatoes, and basil.Yesterday was technically the last big CSA Day for the summer, but we are going to start it up again in the fall. Starting with the first week of school on August 23rd, we will offer eight spots for UVA students and faculty to join. I'm really excited for another CSA session!Since this is the last day of Judith's and my internship, we headed up to Michelle and Marie's house for some breakfast together after we had worked for a bit in the garden. Michelle and her mom had made delicious peach and blackberry cobbler (it's never too early for cobbler!) which we enjoyed with maple yogurt and coffee. My stomach and I were quite content!I'm sad that this is my last day of my internship, but I know this is definitely not my last day at Morven. In fact, our garden and this project are just beginning. We are organizing partnerships with other schoolyard gardens in which UVA students will garden and work with younger students at elementary, middle, and high schools in the area. Between that, the CSA, and my independent study on season extension for our garden, I'll be spending lots more time at Morven. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this project, and I can't wait to continue it!
