Sustainable Agricultural Practices

Morven Kitchen Garden has been sustainably growing produce for over 10 years. Our growing techniques are always evolving, and we delight in experimenting with new techniques. Currently, we practice several different sustainable, regenerative farming methods.

Organic Production:

Although we are not certified in Organic production, we do not use synthetic pesticides or herbicides. (Our three beehives really prefer it that way!)

Season Extension:

Through careful planning, we aim to produce a bountiful harvest year-round. This helps our local community become more carbon neutral, by supplying fresh foods nearby instead of relying on imported crops from warmer parts of the world. We have two greenhouses which help extend the growing season into the early spring/late fall, as well as a combination of hoops and row covers.

Crop Diversity and Rotation:

We grow over 40 different plant varieties, including edible fruits and vegetables as well as insectary flowers, which attract beneficial birds and insects. We also practice an eight year crop rotation, with plant family groupings divided into seven segments and one year-round cover crop. Crop rotation can prevent soil-borne diseases and pests organically, as well as prevent soil exhaustion.

No-Till Farming:

“no-till” or “low-till” farming is a method of growing that will minimize or eliminate plowing. Plowing or tilling a field reduces the amount of organic matter in the soil and disturbs the natural ecosystem below the soil surface. Inspired by the decline of current tillage equipment, MKG decided to begin a transition towards no-till farming in 2022 with the construction of permanent raised beds and mulched pathways. Learn more about why no-till farming is important here.
