The Formal Gardens
The Formal Gardens were restored in 1930 by distinguished landscape architect Annette Hoyt Flanders. Since 1933, the Formal Gardens have been open to the public for Historic Garden Week for over 75 years.
Capacity: 3 garden “rooms” / Available for tours
Features: Largest Chinese Chestnut in VA / Century-old Osage Orange Tree / 4,000 tulips every spring / Wide array of boxwoods / Scenic overlook / Apple orchard
Japanese Garden
The Japanese Garden prioritizes the relationship of the site and its surrounding natural environment. The Japanese and American landscape architects worked together to combine a plant palate using Japanese plants and native, American plants. The climate here at Morven is relatively similar to that of Kyoto, which allowed a co-mingling of some 50 plants indigenous to Japan and America.
The Land
In addition to our Formal and Japanese gardens, Morven is proud to host over 30 state-champion trees, and a wealth of forested land. As a 3,000 acre property, we enjoy the company of a number of four-legged visitors and we greatly appreciate the birds whose songs help make Morven such a beautiful place.
