This Week at the Garden - Good Chives Only

Date: October 14, 2022

Blog Post by: Brookelyn Mitchell

Another week, another successful appearance at the Cville Market pop up! We had a beautiful array of fresh flowers, garlic, tomatoes, peppers, kale, squash, and eggplant, among numerous other delicious options available for the UVA community to purchase. Although we enjoy every opportunity to engage with Charlottesville locals, this event was particularly special because of our collaboration with Feel Good UVA: a CIO on grounds dedicated to sustainably ending world hunger one sandwich at a time.

Gracie, Jayna, and Fiona at the MKG table!

Named the “MKG,” this sandwich was made with our crisp chives directly from the garden. Each flavorful bite was not only concentrated with cheese and chives, but it was also accompanied with an aftertaste of the good feelings that come with eating locally sourced food. By minimizing the distance in which your food is derived, packing and carbon emissions are reduced due to the decreased amount of transportation needed to get that food in your hands. This sandwich was good for the soul and for the planet!

Our participation in events such as these are made possible through the immense dedication of the MKG team, student interns, and local volunteers, so we cannot thank our supporters enough! With winter quickly approaching, we are relishing every last moment of the fall harvest, and we encourage you to do so as well. Sign up for a Volunteer Day through our Eventbrite page to spend some of these gorgeous autumn days in the garden!
