Volunteer

MKG holds volunteer workdays multiple days a week, year round.  The schedule changes each semester and summer.  Please sign up for our email newsletter to find out the current schedule.

We are excited to now be open for volunteer workdays. Please see our Covid garden protocols that allow us to keep each other safe as we continue the vital work of growing food.

We welcome both individual volunteers as well as larger groups such as a CIOs, Clubs, or UVA offices and departments. No gardening experience is necessary.

For groups over five people, please email us in advance to schedule a workday.

A Typical Workday

At garden workdays, you will be greeted by a MKG student or staff who will give you an overview of the garden, explains the day’s garden tasks, and then lead you in the day’s activities.

Examples of seasonal garden tasks include:

  • Preparing garden beds for planting

  • Weeding

  • Seeding or planting in the garden

  • Seeding trays in the greenhouse

  • Harvesting

Helpful Tips

  • CLOTHING: Dress for outside weather. Wear clothing and closed toed shoes you do not mind getting dirty.

  • PROTECTION: We recommend wearing sunscreen. Some volunteers have found bug spray to be helpful.

  • WATER: We provide fresh drinking water. Bring a reusable water bottle to help us save resources.

  • SUPPLIES: The garden supplies gloves and tools. We keep sunscreen and bug spray on hand too.

  • BATHROOM: Is located near the garden in the Food Lab. You are welcome to bring extra clothes and change before you leave.
