More opportunities to get involved:

The Morven Kitchen Garden has provided inspiration for student academic projects as well as been a place to create innovative student programs. Students have introduced beehives to the garden, created a CSA program, studied possibilities for rainwater catchment and created exciting programs like Perennials for Patients.

What have you gained from your internship at MKG?

  • “The biggest thing I’ve learned, besides the hard farming knowledge, is how to work as a team. With something as complicated as an organic farm, collective knowledge is invaluable towards achieving our common goal. Everyone works really hard and we’re all excited about MKG, it would be impossible to run the farm without us all putting our brains together. That’s the best part about Morven, the community. From the salience of crop rotation, how to bed prep with a tilther, to the realties of improvisation with the unpredictable environment, I have learned so much from my peers and Fiona.

  • “I am going to take with me the value of experimental hands-on agricultural education. There aren’t crazy high stakes, and everyone who works here, especially Fiona, makes it fun. But, she has a way to also keep everyone focused on what matters which is practicing sustainable agricultural techniques. I just really enjoyed learning about sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices, because it is exactly what I want to do in my future career. Morven inspired me to take the path that I am currently on.”

  • “It was really cool to feel being at the farm from the other side, because I was a Farm Crew for about a year. I was trying my best to take in as much knowledge as I could, but it was entirely different having that knowledge and being able to share it both with our Farm Crew and lead volunteers with it. It was incredible being able to lead volunteer days and showing kids around the farm. Being able to teach about the importance of sustainable farming and sustainable food systems, especially in this current climate … that was really great.”

  • “There is a palpable magic at Morven farm. Beyond our commitment to regenerative agriculture, beyond our dedication to serve both the Charlottesville and UVA communities, there is a true magic when people who are deeply committed to a goal unite. I have learned so much about sustainable agriculture techniques through Fiona and especially my peers, and I am so grateful to be working alongside such motivated and intelligent people.”
